In the last few years, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has built wonderful new sports venues on the North Shore: PNC Park for the up and coming Pirates, and Heinz Field for the perennial contending Steelers. The area around the parks is catching up to the glitz of the new stadiums, and there are a now several places to stop and have dinner and your favorite beverage on game nights, lunch or even when the team is on the road. The Carnegie Science Center is nearby, as is a scenic walking trail along the river.
The parks are located on the North Shore, connected to Downtown Pittsburgh (the Golden Triangle) by the Clemente (Federal Street) Bridge. Pittsburgh, with its tunnels and hills, is not the easiest city to navigate, but the ballpark area is accessible by freeway from the North or South. Follow the signs for North Shore. There are the Gold parking lots, $2 during the day, but much higher during events. Other parking lots are in the area, including Allegheny Center Mall.
The newness of the area is apparent in the selection of bars and restaurants. There are several, most in new buildings a short distance from the parks, with considerable room for more in the buildings still under construction or renovation.
Along Federal Street, across from PNC Park is a string of restaurants. This includes Ugly, which purports to have the best food in the city and everyone’s favorite, Iron City Beer. Next door is Firewater’s, Hi-Tops and the North Shore Saloon and BBQ.
On the other side of the street is SoHo, in the Spring Hill Suites, which is open until 2 a.m. for a late snack or to toast a hometown victory or drown your sorrows.
Across the street in PNC Park, but accessible from inside or outside, are three restaurants, the famous chain Outback Steakhouse, Atria’s Restaurant and Tavern, and Vincent’s Greentree, both Pittsburgh traditions.
Between PNC Park and Heinz Field, some restaurants have opened up on North Shore Drive. The Mexican and Cajun themed Calico Jack’s Cantina is next door to McFadden’s Saloon. The very upscale Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse is a few doors down to the west. A little farther down toward Heinz Field is the newly opened Jerome Bettis Grill 36, named for the Steelers great running back.
Pittsburgh fans love their sports heroes, as evidenced by the new parks and the streets named after Tony Dorsett and Bill Mazeroski. They also love their food and drink, and have a number of great places to enjoy both in the North Shore.
