Home of Sesame Place and the scenic village of New Hope, Bucks County, PA is a great destination for a day or weekend trip from the NYC metro area.

Bordered on two sides by the Delaware River, Bucks County is a popular spot for tubing, kayaking, canoeing and fly-fishing. The County boasts five state parks where visitors can enjoy picnicking, boating, swimming and hiking. Bucolic country roads are perfect for a bicycle tour of the county’s many covered bridges.

As one of three original counties in William Penn’s Quaker colony, Bucks County is filled with history and touring its quaint towns is almost like stepping back in time. Washington’s famous crossing of the Delaware, a turning point iof the Revolutionary War, took place on Christmas Day, 1776 in Bucks County. The crossing is re-enacted each Christmas.

Doylestown Museums

Victorian Doylestown has a wealth of historic sites. The Mercer Museum, built in 1916 is a National Historic landmark. The museum’s collection gives visitors an overview of what life was like in the days when Americans traveled in covered wagons. The exhibits include tools used in more than 60 early American trades including shoemaker and blacksmith.

Also in Doylestown is the Fonthill Museum, the concrete castle home that architect Henry Mercer built for himself between 1908 and 1912. The museum’s collection centers on Mercer’s impressive collection of prints and handcrafted tiles from around the world. Thousands of Mercer’s own original crafted tiles adorn the walls, floors and ceilings of the castle. Mercer’s other interests are reflected in the displays of early American furniture, pottery and other forms of decorative arts.

Sesame Place a Must for Young Kids

Back in the 21st century, modern day Bucks County is home to Big Bird and the Sesame Street gang. Sesame Place in Langhorn, PA is the only theme park in the nation based on the popular television show. Bigger than life characters roam the park and stop for photos with visitors. There are shows throughout the day that involve even the youngest audience members.

On a hot summer day, the whole family will enjoy Sesame Place’s many water attractions including the exciting Sky Splash or Big Birds Rambling River. There are also water attractions suitable for little ones to cool off in. If you get to the park about an hour before opening, you can join enjoy an all-you-can eat breakfast buffet with Big Bird and friends.

Peddler's Village, New Hope Shops and Galleries

Shopping abounds in Bucks County. Charming Peddler’s Village in Lahaska has 70 specialty shops and restaurants spread over 42 beautifully landscaped acres. Shops are connected by brick walkways reminiscent of an 18th century village. Children will enjoy climbing Giggleberry Mountain at Ciggleberry Fair and mastering the largest indoor obstacle course in the area. They can also take a ride on the antique carousel.

For travellers planning a weekend away without the kids, the picturesque town of New Hope situated on the banks of the Delaware River, is a wonderful choice. Its streets are lined with unique shops, galleries, antique stores, and lively outdoor cafes. Accommodations range from romantic bed and breakfasts in historic Victorian homes to modern motels.

The Bucks County Visitors Bureau provides complete listings of dining and lodging options in and around Bucks County. They also have information on additional activities including hot air balloon rides, winery tours and horeback riding. With so many activities to choose from, a day trip to Bucks County can definitely be stretched to a weekend or longer.
